The day of mourning ( Persian روز غم ruz-e gham , English Day of Sorrow ) is celebrated by many Shiite Muslims worldwide. He commemorates the destruction of the Baqīʿ al-Gharqad cemeteriesin Medina and the Jannat al-Muʿallā in Mecca in 1925–1926 by fanatical Ichwan , followers of the Wahhabi ideology. The destruction took place immediately after the conquest ofthe Kingdom of Hejaz , which wasunder Hashemite rule.

Even at the time of the destruction, Muslims from all over the world protested against this, especially the Madschles-e Schora-ye Melli (“National Advisory Assembly”), the parliament of Iran . In the Gregorian calendar , the destruction took place on April 21, 1926; the Muslim calendar, based on the lunar cycle , falls on the 8th show whale ; on this day the day of mourning is celebrated. Due to the differences to the Gregorian calendar, the day varies by about 11 days from year to year.

During the destruction, the shrines of many members of the Ahl al-bait (family of the founder of the religion, Mohammed ), who are primarily thought of by Shiite Muslims and who play a central role in Shiite theology , were removed . Among the destroyed graves in Medina was that of Fatima , a daughter of Mohammed.
