The Victory Day ( Bengali বিজয় দিবস Bijay Dibas ), December 16, is a public holiday in Bangladesh . The holiday was introduced in 1972 to commemorate Victory Day over Pakistan in the Bangladesh War .

history

The Bangladesh War was a war between Pakistan (then West Pakistan ) and Bangladesh (then East Pakistan ) from March 26, 1971 to December 16, 1971, in which India also intervened on the side of East Pakistan ( Third Indo-Pakistani War ).

The war ended on December 16, 1971 with the unconditional surrender of the Pakistani armed forces . As a result of the defeat, the Pakistani military government had to resign and sign the unconditional surrender.

People's Republic of Bangladesh

With the unconditional surrender of Pakistan's armed forces on December 16, East Pakistan was officially recognized as the independent state of Bangladesh .

Celebrations in Bangladesh

Victory Day is celebrated across the country with the ceremonial raising of the national flag and the distribution of sweets. The main festivities take place in Sabhar , where the Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho (German: National Martyrs Monument) is located, and the events are broadcast live on the state television and radio; many other stations have enriched their programs with patriotic films and music. Every year on this day, a military parade takes place in the capital Dhaka . The various regiments of the land, sea and air forces march in parade uniform, the President, in his office Commander in Chief of the armed forces, receives the salute.

Celebrations in India

India also commemorates the victory over Pakistan in the Third Indo-Pakistani War on the same day in 1971. The day is also known in India as " Vijay Divas ".
