Taia naticoides , also called (knobbed) piano snail or brush algae snail in aquaristic circles , is a freshwater snail from the family of marsh snails (Viviparidae).

features

The conical or slightly conical-egg-shaped housing is up to about 3.2 cm high and 2.1 cm wide. The sculpture consists of three spiral lines or strips with mostly knotty or scale-like thickenings. On the embryonic housing there are initially three spiral ridges, of which the lower (peripheral) ridge is more developed. They intersect with more or less clearly developed growth strips. The strength of the spiral strips is very variable. The casing is mostly olive-green with spiral brownish bands; There are two ties on the first turn and three ties on the last turn. The coloration is also variable, so the case can also be more brownish with lighter bandages. The mouth is roughly triangular in plan with a broad and thick spindle callus. The pear-shaped operculum is shiny horn-colored with concentric growth stripes. It is concave on the outside, on the inside it has a strong strip along the inner edge.

The head is long and the eyes are almost at the base of the antennae. The radula consists of seven elements per transverse row, the central tooth is very broad trapezoidal, the marginal number is long and narrow.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Taia naticoides occurs in the eastern Indian states of Manipur and Tripura as well as in Inle Lake in Myanmar . It lives there in flowing and still waters.

Development and way of life

The animals are sexually separated and viviparous. The fertilization is internal, the eggs develop in the uterus; the young leave the uterus as ready-made miniature adults. The animals feed on detritus.

Taia naticoides in the aquarium hobby

Taia naticoides has been kept in freshwater aquariums since around 2007 and is also available from aquarists. The animals are easy to keep, but require a water temperature of 24–28 ° C.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1868 by William Theobald as Paludina naticordes (text) or Paludina naticoides (plate). It is the type species of the genus Taia , which was established by Nelson Annandale in 1918 .
