The Taiwan Renewal Party ( Chinese  台灣 維新 , Pinyin Táiwān wéixīn dǎng , English Taiwan Renewal Party ) is a small party in the Republic of China on Taiwan .

history

The party was founded at a meeting in Taipei on August 24, 2019, about 5 months before the upcoming presidential election and election of the Legislative Yuan . Su Huan-chih (蘇煥智), a former district administrator of Tainan County, was elected as the first party chairman . Su originally belonged to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but left the party in the run-up to the 2018 mayoral election in Tainan , in which he ran as an independent candidate. The party belongs to the pan-green camp led by the DPP, but it has also been critical of the DPP's political course. In an interview, Chairman Su said that the DPP was too fearing that the People's Republic of China would take over Taiwan in its election campaign. In reality, however, Taiwan is relatively safe. Much more important are institutional reforms in Taiwan. Su did not attach great importance to the name dispute “Taiwan” versus “Republic of China”. The two terms should "reconcile with each other". In its first election statements, the new party called for a reform and decentralization of the tax system. This could create local incentives for companies to settle here. Ideally, only half of the tax revenue should go to central government and the other half should stay with regional bodies. In addition, the welfare state must be expanded. Families with children, retirees, and people building condominiums deserved more support.

The party announced that it would nominate at least 10 candidates in the election of the Legislative Yuan. On the question of whether the party wanted to support the DPP candidate Tsai Ing-wen in the presidential election , she only commented evasively. When the party was founded, there was speculation whether the party might work with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) founded by Ko Wen-je just 2½ weeks earlier . The party chairman Su, however, expressed himself cautiously, as it has not yet been possible to see what values the TPP stands for.
