Shallow water, bird paradise |
Lake Tåkern is one of the most famous bird lakes in Sweden . It is located in the Swedish province of Östergötland County or the historical province of Östergötland , about ten kilometers south of the city of Vadstena . It is one of the Swedish Ramsar areas .
history
The lake only got its current appearance with the low water level and the boggy banks after attempts were made to dry the lake completely through land reclamation measures in the years 1842 to 1844 and thus to gain fertile arable and pasture land. The average water level in the lake was then lowered from 2.50 meters to 0.80 meters, creating around 1,600 hectares of arable and pasture land and around 500 hectares of marshland on its banks .
Bird paradise
The lake, which is around 44 square kilometers in size today, is surrounded by extensive wetlands . What is particularly striking is the shallow water depth, on average 0.6 m. In years with dry summers, its size decreases and the water depth decreases. It also freezes completely in cold winters. It is a bird paradise, which is now a nature reserve as part of the Natura 2000 project. Around 260 species of birds have been observed at the lake, making it the most biodiverse bird area in Sweden.
There are bird stations with observation towers in Hov, Svälinge, Väversunda and Glänås. There is an exhibition on the lake in the city of Vadstena.
Varia
The lake is described in the nineteenth chapter of Selma Lagerlöf's novel The Wonderful Journey of Little Nils Holgersson with the Wild Geese .
