Talat Chaiya ( Thai ตลาด ไชยา ) is a small town ( thesaban tambon ) in the province of Surat Thani . It is located roughly on the site of the old Müang Chaiya, one of the oldest and most historically significant places in southern Thailand . Chaiya is also the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Chaiya .

history

Chaiya is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. Due to the name ("Chai-ya" is said to have originated from Sri-vi- ja-ya ), some historians assume that this was the temporary capital of the Srivijaya Empire , which spanned the south of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra from the 7th ruled until the 13th century. Numerous perfectly shaped Buddha statues from that era were found here , which can now be seen in the Chaiya National Museum. Other statues can be found in the National Museum Bangkok .

Attractions

Immediately to the west of the Talat Chaiya border is the important Buddhist temple Wat Borommathat Chaiya from the 8th century. The central chedi was built with bricks and mortar made from vegetable fibers. The complex was restored quite extensively in the 1990s. Since 1949 it has also been the final resting place for the monk Phra Chaiya Wiwat, who is highly revered nationwide. Next to it is the Chaiya National Museum .

About six kilometers southwest of the city is that of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu founded Buddhist Meditation Center Suan Mokkh .
