The talayots of Binicodrell are the remains of a prehistoric settlement on the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca . A talayot is a tower-like megalithic structure characteristic of the early Iron Age on Mallorca and Menorca , after which the Talayot culture (850–550 BC) is named.
location
The site is located on the southwestern outskirts of Es Migjorn Gran near the Finca of Binicodrell de Darrera. It can be reached by following the Cami de Sa Malagarba street , about 200 m before the cemetery, where there is a car park. The area is fenced. At the entrance there is an information board for the Xarxa Menorca Monumental . The talayot of Es Mestall is 370 meters to the southwest .
description
Reports from the early 19th century speak of five or six talayots in Binicodrell Darrera. Within 200 years their number has reduced to two.
The 6.80 m high northern talayot is the better preserved. It has an oval cross-section with a maximum diameter of 21.60 m and the shape of a truncated cone . As a special feature, it has a ramp on its north side , via which you can zigzag to the platform at its top. The remains of an earlier room can still be seen here.
The southern talayot about 60 m away has been badly damaged. The large stones that must have formed its outer wall have disappeared. The small stones visible nowadays were more likely to be filler material. According to ancient reports, the talayot had a wide entrance from the southeast, which led via a corridor to a round chamber. Its diameter, determined by Hernández Mora in 1922, reached 15.10 m.
So far, no systematic digging has been carried out at the site . It is under state protection as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural RI-55-0000696).
