The valley bridge Sechshelden is a 940 meter long bridge of the federal highway 45 in Sechshelden , a district of Haiger in the Lahn-Dill district , standing.

The structure is located between the Haiger - Burbach and Dillenburg motorway junctions . To the east of Haiger, at a maximum height of 25 m, it spans the Dill valley , a tributary of the Lahn , as well as the railway line from Haiger to Dillenburg , the federal road 277 from Haiger to Dillenburg and local roads from Sechshelden.

In the course of the bridge, the motorway is curved in an S-shape. The overpass was built with two separate superstructures for the one-way carriageways between 1966 and 1968 with construction costs of around 18 million DM. Almost 17 million euros are being invested in this.

Foundation and substructures

The abutments and pillars have a flat foundation . The maximum 22 m high pillars are made of reinforced concrete and have a full circular cross-section. As a rule, four of the 74 supports are arranged in a bearing axis.

Superstructures

The two adjacent superstructures of the prestressed concrete bridge have the continuous beam in the longitudinal direction as a structural system and are divided into two independent sections with an expansion joint . There are double supports at the joint. The construction height is usually 2.8 m. In the transverse direction, the superstructures are designed as two-web T-beam cross- sections. The prestressing consists of internal tendons in the longitudinal direction .

The spans for the 10-span western bridge section are 61.8 m + 9 × 47.65 m. The pillar axes at the expansion joint are 5.6 m apart. The following superstructure of the directional carriageway Siegen has nine fields with the span widths 4 × 47.65 m + 31.65 m + 72.6 m + 52.0 m + 43.0 m + 54.0 m. The parallel superstructure of the direction Gießen carriageway has one field less and is 31.65 m shorter.

execution

The superstructures were built in sections with an advancing armor. The advancing scaffolding was supported on support towers, on the pillars and once in the field between the pillars.

Repair

Between 2010 and 2013, an emergency repair measure will be carried out due to the load-bearing capacity deficits at a cost of around 17.1 million euros for a remaining service life of the bridge of nine years. Among other things, the superstructure is reinforced by the installation of additional transverse and longitudinal tendons . During the work on May 10, 2011, an anchor block for the new tendons that had been made in autumn 2010 came loose and damaged the overhead line of the Dill route. The railway line and motorway had to be closed.

Citizens' initiative wants to move bridges

The citizens' initiative MuT (people under the valley bridge), founded in August 2010, is opposed to plans to replace the new bridge on the spot. However, the Hessian Minister of Economics Dieter Posch ruled out a bridge relocation . Nevertheless, on September 28, 2011, the city council of Haiger commissioned a feasibility study to examine an alternative route. According to the Ministry in Wiesbaden, only such a study could bring about a change in planning.

The alternative route (coming from Siegen) could lead over the grass football field, the Dill and the B 277. From there, an approximately 400 meter long tunnel would have to be built near the Dillenburg motorway junction in order to reconnect the new route to the old one. The junction would be relocated a few hundred meters in the direction of Dillenburg. However, since this variant means additional costs of around € 50 million, the Federal Ministry of Transport insists on the replacement of the new building on site.
