The valley market in Bad Wimpfen is one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany. It is celebrated annually in connection with a grocer's market and has a history of over 1000 years.

Historical development

Through a certificate from Emperor Otto I , the collegiate church of St. Peter in Wimpfen im Tal came into possession of the market rights for the patronage festival for St. Peter on June 29th in 965 . Due to its convenient location (as early as Roman times, a bridge crossed the Neckar in Wimpfen ) and its political importance, Wimpfen remained an important market town throughout history. After the construction of the Palatinate Wimpfen in the high Middle Ages, Wimpfen am Berg outstripped the valley settlement as an imperial city and tried to attract the market from the valley settlement. In 1377, King Wenzel also granted the mountain town market rights to St. Peter and Paul, which resulted in disputes between the mountain and valley towns that lasted around 100 years before the mountain town gave up the market in favor of the valley town. The fair now takes place every year on the last weekend in June. Although a grocer's market is still part of the valley market, in the recent past it has mostly been transformed into a folk festival with bars and restaurants. The valley market will be held for the 1050th time in 2015.

Current situation

The valley market lasts six days (Thursday to Tuesday) and has an extensive amusement park. In 2007, for example, a 44 meter high Ferris wheel , a Turboforce, a Frisbee, a small roller coaster and a space roller were installed. In past years, the 50-meter-high Ferris wheel, which was also set up at the Oktoberfest in Munich, was present. On weekends the music runs in the marquee until 2 a.m., which is unusual because the valley market takes place in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings and the collegiate church. Traditionally, there are also two fireworks on the banks of the Neckar during the valley market .
