The dam Covão do Meio (dam "cave / ditch of the middle"; Portuguese Barragem de Covão do Meio ) is located in the region of central Portugal in the Guarda district . It dams the Loriga to a reservoir ( Albufeira do Covão do Meio in Portuguese ). The dam is located in the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela nature reserve . The small town of Loriga is about four kilometers west of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1951. The construction was completed in 1953. The dam is owned by HIDROCENEL, Energia do Centro, SA .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of an arch on the left and a weight dam on the right. Its height is 31.5 m above the foundation level (25 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 1,653.9 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 300 m. The volume of the dam is 9,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 40 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 1,653.7 m (maximum 1,653.9 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.9 km² and holds 1.4 million m³ of water - of which 1.3 million m³ can be used .
The water from the reservoir is fed through a tunnel with a length of 2,354 m to the reservoir of the Lagoa Comprida dam .
