The Lagoa Comprida dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Lagoa Comprida ) is located in the central region of Portugal in the Guarda district . It dams the Lagoa to a reservoir ( Albufeira da Lagoa Comprida in Portuguese ). The dam is located in the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela nature reserve . The municipality of Sabugueiro is about three kilometers to the north.
The project to build the dam began in 1910. The construction was completed in 1966. The dam is owned by HIDROCENEL, Energia do Centro, SA .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure forms a gravity dam made of masonry with a height of 29 m above the foundation level (28.24 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at an altitude of 1,600 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 1,200 m. The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 92 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The volume of the structure is 100,000 m³.
The dam was built in several steps: by 1914 it had reached a height of 6 m, which was increased to 15 m by 1934. It reached its final height of 28 m in 1965.
Reservoir
At the normal storage target of 1600 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.75 km² and holds 13.8 million m³ of water.
The water from the reservoir of the Covão do Meio dam is led through a tunnel with a length of 2354 m into the reservoir of the Lagoa Comprida dam.
Lagoa Comprida power plant
The Lagoa Comprida power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal with an installed capacity of 0.6 MW . The average annual production is 1.7 million kWh .
The Francis turbine with a horizontal shaft has a maximum output of 0.632 MW and the associated generator 0.72 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbine is 600 / min. The generator has a nominal voltage of 0.69 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 0.69 kV is increased to 15 kV by means of a power transformer.
The maximum height of fall is 28.5 m. The maximum flow rate is 2.64 m³ / s.
The power plant started work in 2003. It is operated by EDP .
Sabugueiro I power plant
The Sabugueiro I power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal , with an installed capacity of 13.2 (or 12.8 or 13.24) MW . The average annual production is 48 million kWh .
After the water has left the Lagoa Comprida power plant, it is directed through a canal to the storage basin of the Sabugueiro I power plant. From there it reaches the machine house via pressure pipes .

In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased to 60 kV by means of a power transformer.
The maximum height of fall is 593.7 m. The maximum flow rate is 0.66 m³ / s for turbines 1 and 2 and 1.32 m³ / s for turbine 3.
The power plant was commissioned in 1947 and renovated from 2000 to 2002. It is operated by EDP .
