The dam Cuesta del Viento ( Spanish Represa Cuesta del Viento or Dique Cuesta del Viento ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of San Juan , Argentina . It dams the Río Jáchal to a reservoir. The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the Cuesta del Viento hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico Cuesta del Viento ).
The dam is used for flood protection, irrigation and electricity generation. Construction began in 1986. It was completed in September 1998. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Provincia de San Juan ). They are operated by the Energia Provincial Sociedad del Estado .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a bulk dam with a height of 62 m above the river bed . The top of the dam is at an altitude of 1535 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 247 (or 320) m, its width at the crown 10 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 2.423 (or 3) million m³.
The dam has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . A maximum of 960 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge, and a maximum of 36 m³ / s via the bottom outlet.
Reservoir
The normal target is between 1500 and 1529 m. With a storage target of 1529 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 12.31 km² and holds 192.5 million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 1532 m.
power plant
The power plant's machine house is at the foot of the dam on the right-hand side. The installed capacity with a Kaplan turbine is 8,896 MW . The average annual production is given as 28 million kWh . The nominal speed of the turbine is 428.6 min −1 . The fall height is between 38 and 67 m. The maximum flow rate is 18 m³ / s (minimum 6 m³ / s).
