Chambéry Cathedral or Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales ( French Cathédrale Saint-François-de-Sales de Chambéry ) is a Roman Catholic church in Chambéry ( France ). The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Chambéry is dedicated to St. Francis de Sales and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church was built in the 15th century as the church of the neighboring Franciscan monastery and consecrated in 1488. The foundation was made on 30,000 larch wood piles on the marshy terrain. With the establishment of the diocese by Pope Pius VI. the church was elevated to a cathedral on August 18, 1779. 1801 was consecrated to Francis de Sales. In the church, the Savoy National Assembly voted in 1789 in the course of the French Revolution after the occupation by French troops for accession to France. The cathedral was largely cleared out during the Revolution, and the interior was completely restored in the early 19th century. In 1874 the cathedral was given by Pope Pius IX. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica. In 1906 it was declared a monument historique .

architecture

The three-aisled basilica is 78 meters long, 34 meters wide and 23 meters high, the church tower is next to the choir. The five-sided apse is surrounded by an ambulatory . The altar dates from the 17th century. The ceilings have richly decorated cross vaults . The cathedral has the largest ensemble of trompe l'œil painting in Europe with almost 6000 m², created in the 19th century by the artists Sevesi and Vicario. In the floor from the 17th century, a 35 meter long labyrinth pattern was laid out in the central aisle between 1860 and 1870 and renewed in 1989. From the side aisles there are 14 chapels, the windows of which were almost all created between 1860 and 1876 by the Swiss master glass maker Laurent Gsell.

The local museum Musée savoisien in the former Franciscan monastery from the 17th century is connected via the adjoining cloister . It shows the cultural history of Savoy.

organ

The organ with more than 2,800 pipes was built in 1847 by the Lyon-born organ builder Augustin Zeiger and is a listed building. It was restored in 2004 by the organ builder Pascal Quoirin.
