The dam Florentino Ameghino ( Spanish Represa Florentino Ameghino or Dique Florentino Ameghino ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in the province of Chubut , Argentina . It dams the Río Chubut to a reservoir . The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the Florentino Ameghino hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico Florentino Ameghino ).
The dam is used for flood protection, electricity generation and irrigation. Construction began in 1943. It was completed in April 1963. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are state-owned ( Secretaría de Energía de la Nación ). The concession for the operation was given to Hidroeléctrica Ameghino SA in 1994 for 50 years. The dam was named after the scientist Florentino Ameghino .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 70 m above the river bed (maximum height 113 m). The top of the wall is at a height of 170 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 255 m, its width at the crown 8.5 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 483,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . A maximum of 150 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge, and a maximum of 52 m³ / s via the bottom outlet.
Reservoir
The normal destination is between 137.7 and 166 m. With a storage target of 166 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 74 km² and holds 1.28 billion m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 169 m, the minimum 102.25 m. At the maximum storage target, the reservoir holds 1.835 (or 1.855) billion m³ of water. The reservoir extends over a length of 80 km.
power plant
The power plant's machine house is located at the foot of the dam on the left bank of the river. The installed capacity is 58 (or 60) MW . The average annual generation is given as 160 (or 178) million kWh . The power plant went into operation on November 4, 1968.
The two Francis turbines have a maximum output of 29 MW each. The nominal speed of the turbines is 250 min −1 . The fall height is between 41.7 and 68.6 m. The flow rate is 35 m³ / s (maximum 105, minimum 25 m³ / s).
In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 13.2 kV to 132 kV using power transformers.
