The Hatta Dam is located in the Hajar Mountains near the city of Hatta , United Arab Emirates . It is used for irrigation and drinking water supply. It is planned to build a pumped storage power plant on the site.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with a height of 32 m. The length of the dam crest is 220 m. The core of the dam is made of asphalt concrete . The sealing curtain extends to a depth of 20 m. The dam was built in the 1990s.

The flood relief is located on the right side of the dam. A mural was applied to the flood relief depicting Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Muhammad bin Raschid Al Maktum .

Reservoir

In full back of the reservoir summarizes 6.5 million m³ (billion 1.716 gallons ) of water.

pumped storage power plant

In 2017, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) commissioned Électricité de France (EDF ) to prepare a study on a pumped storage power plant (PSK). The reservoir of the Hatta dam would serve as the lower basin of the PSK. The cost of the PSK is expected to be AED 1.92 billion .

The installed capacity of the PSK is given as 250  MW . The upper basin will be around 3 to 4 km from the Hatta reservoir. The difference in height between the lower and upper basins should be 300 m.

In 2018, DEWA commissioned another study for an additional PSK. The PSK to be built should have an installed capacity of 400 MW and a storage capacity of 2500  MWh ; it would also use the Hatta reservoir as a lower basin.
