The Meimoa dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Meimoa ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Castelo Branco district . It dams the Meimoa , a left (southern) tributary of the Zêzere to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem da Meimoa ). The eponymous municipality of Meimoa is located about three kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1978. The construction was completed in 1985. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by INAG and Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários da Cova da Beira .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 56 m above the foundation level (50 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 571.5 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 656 m and its width 10 m. The volume of the dam is 2.5 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 11 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 124 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 228 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 568.5 m (maximum 568.99 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.22 km² and holds 40.9 million m³ of water - 27 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum storage target is 547 m.
