The Rejeitados dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Rejeitados ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Beja district . It dams the Barranco do Morgado . The small town of Aljustrel is located about 500 m east of the dam. The Águas Claras dam is approx. 400 m above the Rejeitados dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1990. The dam serves as a settling basin for the clarification of wastewater from the processing of ores from the nearby mine (see also Tailings ). It was owned by Pirites Alentejanas, SA . On February 5, 2009, Lundin Mining sold the Aljustrel mine to MTO SGPS, SA. sold.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 32 m above the foundation level (30 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 157 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 500 m and its width 9 m. The volume of the dam is 289,000 m³.
The dam has a flood relief system that can discharge a maximum of 0.9 m³ / s. The design flood is 1.87 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 155.75 m (maximum 156 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.49 km² and holds 3.46 million m³ of water.
