The Serra Serrada dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Serra Serrada ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Bragança district . It dams the Andorinhas to a reservoir. The municipality of França is about six kilometers southeast of the dam.

The project to build the dam began in 1986. The construction was completed in 1989. In addition to supplying drinking water, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Bragança City Council, CM Bragança .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 25 m above the foundation level (20 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 1254 m above sea level . The length of the wall crown is 170 m and its width 2 m. The volume of the dam is 14,600 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 3.7 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 46 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 46 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 1252 m (maximum 1252.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.2647 km² and holds 1.68 million m³ of water - of which 1.5 million m³ can be used. The minimum stowage destination is 1,241.5 m.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 3.4  MW, the Serra Serrada power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal . The average annual production is 8.71 million kWh . Two Pelton turbines are installed.
