The Várzea de Calde dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Várzea de Calde ) is located in the central region of Portugal in the Viseu district . It dams the Ribeira da Várzea , a right (northern) tributary of the Vouga , to a reservoir. The city of Viseu is about ten kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1995. The construction was completed in 2000. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by the Junta de Agricultores do Regadio de Várzea de Calde .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a height of 33.5 m above the foundation level (31.5 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 549 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 131 m and its width 6 m. The volume of the dam is 165,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 2.3 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 21 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 24 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 547.2 m (maximum 547.8 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.066 km² and holds 0.5638 million m³ of water - of which 0.556 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 527 m.
