The Vale do Gaio dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Vale do Gaio or Barragem Trigo de Morais ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Setúbal district . It dams the Xarrama river to a reservoir (Portuguese Albufeira [da Barragem] de Vale do Gaio ). Approx. 2.5 km below the dam the Xarrama flows into the Sado . The small town of Alcácer do Sal is about 15 km northwest of the dam .

The project to build the dam began in 1936. The construction was completed in 1949. In addition to irrigation, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Associação de Beneficiários do Vale do Sado .

On 5 December 1951, the dam was in honor of the engineer António Trigo de Morais in Barragem Trigo de Morais renamed.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 51 m above the foundation level (34 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 44.5 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 368 m and its width is 6 m. The volume of the structure is 636,000 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 70 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 1,000 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1,710 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 10,000 years.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 40.5 m (maximum 42.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 5.5 (or 5.55) km² and holds 63 million m³ of water - 55 (or 58) million m³ are used. The minimum congestion destination is 11 m.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 1.02  MW , the Vale do Gaio power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 1.2 (or 2.6) million kWh .

The Kaplan turbine was supplied by VA Tech Escher Wyss . It is located in a machine house at the foot of the dam. The power plant's turbine has a maximum output of 1.02 MW and the associated generator 1.30  MVA . The rated speed of the turbine is 500 rpm. The nominal voltage of the generator is 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6 kV is increased to 30 kV by means of a power transformer.

The minimum height of fall is 2.43 m, the maximum 31.93 m. The minimum flow is 1.5 m³ / s, the maximum is 4.8 m³ / s.
