The Talvogtei in Kirchzarten is a former moated castle of the Freiburg bailiffs from the 17th century. It is located on the Osterbach - also called Zastlerbach - which used to flow through the Vogtei. It is popularly known as “Schalampi”. Today the Vogtei is the seat of the town hall of Kirchzarten.

description

The structure of the Talvogtei consists of a three-wing building with a courtyard in front, which is surrounded by a wall. Access is from the east. Originally, the square property was surrounded by a 12 to 14 m wide moat. The building complex corresponds to a Niederungsburg and is one of the youngest castle foundations in the Upper Rhine area.

The walling was originally higher and is on the 12./13. Dated century. The north wing is dated to around 1400 by dendrological studies. He now has a large hall on the ground floor, which was created from three rooms that have been merged. This can be clearly seen on the ceiling, the western part shows paneling from around 1430, the rest is a plank and beam ceiling with partial painting in the Renaissance style . The south wing, the Vogt's apartment, was added in the 16th century, but was rebuilt after a partial collapse in 1952. The west wing was built around 1621, see the marking on the stair tower. In the 18th century, renovations took place in which, on the one hand, the windows of the west wing were arranged symmetrically on the courtyard side and the upper part of the courtyard wall with the battlement was probably dismantled. In 1786 the gate was moved to the middle of the east wall. The current painting corresponds to the original painting, as can be proven on the basis of restoration findings.

The development could be proven until the year 765, when it was donated as a Dinghof to the monastery of St. Gallen . A castle emerged from this Dinghof, which was sold to the Freiburg Johanniter in 1297 ; the curtain wall comes from this castle. Knight Kuno von Falkenstein bought the castle in 1320 . The north wing with the large room was built in 1400. In the years 1492 and 1496, Kirchzarten and thus also the Talvogtei were bought by the city of Freiburg . From 1497 it served as the administrative center for the town's lands in the Dreisamtal. From 1502 the complex was called a castle, in 1786 the administrative term "Talvogtei" became the name of the complex. Angry farmers destroyed most of them in 1525. The central building and the stair tower were built in 1620. In 1785 the central building and the gate were rebuilt. In 1808 the Freiburg Talvogtei was dissolved. In 1881 the buildings were sold to two farmers and from then on they were used for agriculture and as a workshop. The files of the municipal vault in the Dreisamtal are stored and digitized in the Freiburg city archive. The municipality acquired the building in two stages: in 1981 the central wing and in 1990 the north wing.

In the years 1993 to 2000, the valley vault was renovated by the municipality of Kirchzarten and expanded into the town hall. In 2014, in the third amendment to the development plan, the municipal council decided to renovate and continue to use the two associated east-facing listed municipal barns. The Zehntscheuer or community barn on Osterbach, which will be modernized for this purpose, will house the public library and media library as well as a reading café. In the other barn, the Reiß-Scheune, the citizen service and the building authority are moving to new rooms, in addition the two barns will be connected with a walkway and converted to be barrier-free. The costs for this amount to € 1.04 million and are subsidized by the state with € 530,000. The work was originally supposed to be completed by the end of 2016. The buildings were ready for occupancy in May 2017.

use

After the renovation, the Talvogtei is also a cultural center of the region. The inner courtyard is used for cultural events. The annual Christmas market takes place on this site. Since 2013, the castle festival has been taking place there in summer, which has replaced the Dorfhock. The historical rooms of the valley vault can be visited, also with guided tours, and art exhibitions are held regularly in the rooms. In June 2019 the Black Forest Voices Festival took place for the first time in the Talvogtei , workshops for choir and a cappella singing were offered over the 4 days, the daily highlights were the evening concerts with international cast.
