Tamara Mellon , OBE , née Yeardye (born July 7, 1967 in London ) is a British fashion entrepreneur. She is the co-founder of the internationally known shoe fashion company Jimmy Choo , which she ran from 1996 to 2011, and has been running her own fashion brand Tamara Mellon since 2013 .

Life

Tamara Mellon was born in London to Tom Yeardye, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Vidal Sassoon hair salons, and Ann (Davis) Yeardye, a former model for Chanel . The family moved to Los Angeles in 1976. Mellon received her education in Berkshire , Beverly Hills and Switzerland .

In the 1980s, Mellon began her professional career, initially at the US women's magazine Mirabella (Phyllis Walters Public Relations) and in 1990 as an accessory editor at Vogue in London. It was there that Mellon recognized the potential for developing a high-quality series of designer accessories, primarily shoes and bags, and in 1995 approached Jimmy Choo , a shoemaker for custom-made shoes.

With £ 150,000 jump-start funding from her father, Mellon co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd with Choo in 1996 . The then new shoe brand quickly became very successful and is now sold in various individual boutiques and upscale department stores. In 1996 the first store opened on Motcomb Street in London. In 1998, a boutique opened in New York City. Choo left the company in 2001. In 2004 the company was valued at over £ 100 million; In 2007 it was £ 185 million. In mid-2013 Mellon launched her own fashion brand Tamara Mellon based in Manhattan. The company, which sold shoes and apparel through retail stores, registered Chapter 11 in 2015 . At the end of 2016, Mellon announced the relaunch of their brand with a shoe collection that is being sold directly through their website.

Private life

In May 2000 she married Matthew Taylor Mellon II, a member of the Mellon Dynasty and nephew of James Mellon , at Blenheim Palace . The couple, divorced in 2005, have a daughter. In early 2015, Mellon announced her engagement to American entrepreneur Michael Ovitz . Since then she has lived in Ovitz's Los Angeles home.
