Tamburello curve
The tamburello curve was to their reconstruction, a high speed curve of the Formula 1 -Rennstrecke Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola . In this left turn, speeds of over 300 km / h were reached. The San Marino Grand Prix was held annually on this route between 1981 and 2006 .
On May 1, 1994, at the San Marino Grand Prix , the three-time Formula 1 world champion Ayrton Senna had a fatal accident in the Tamburello curve due to an accident that has not yet been fully clarified. Five years earlier, at the 1989 Grand Prix , Gerhard Berger had a serious accident in this corner in which his Ferrari went up in flames; In 1987 Nelson Piquet had a serious accident there during training sessions. After Senna's death, the fast corner was modified. Since then, the tamburello has been a slow S-shaped chicane (left-right-left). It was not possible to create a sufficiently large safety zone or to change the course to the outside, as the Santerno River runs there.
