Tammessaare is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Avinurme ( Avinurme vald ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village now has 20 inhabitants (as of 2010).

At the end of the 17th century, the place consisted only of a forest courtyard, from which the core of the village developed over time. Only residents with the family name Tamm (e) lived there between the First and Second World Wars .

Personalities

The Estonian writer Heino Kiik (1927–2013) spent the summers of his youth in Tammessaare . He was best known for his seven-volume novel series "Arve Jomm", which was published between 1971 and 1990. It deals with the (fictional) life of the typical Estonian villager Arved Tamm, since his birth on January 31, 1910.
