Vadi is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . It belongs to the rural municipality of Avinurme . Vadi has 85 inhabitants (as of 2008).

Description and history

The village of Vadi was first mentioned as Wadey in 1599 . It probably got its name from the Finno-Ugric people of the Votes . They lived in the historical region of Ingermanland on the Avijõgi River in the 13th century , but later mixed with the Estonians .

In 1939, 357 people were still living in Vadi. With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the population fell sharply.

Vadi used to be particularly known for its barrel cooper, who mainly made fish barrels, but also cabbage, cucumber and butter barrels . There was also a living tradition of further wood processing. One of the first schools in the region was founded here in 1775. It was closed in 1963 due to a lack of students.

The Estonian writer Heino Kiik (1927–2013), who was born in nearby Änniksaare , spent his youth in Vadi .
