Tan Chuan-Jin

Tan Chuan-Jin (born January 10, 1969 ) is a Singaporean politician and the 10th speaker of the Parliament of Singapore. As a member of the country's ruling People's Action Party (PAP), he has been Minister for Labor (May 2014 - May 2015) and Minister for Social and Family Development (May 2015 - September 2017) in the Cabinet since May 2014. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since May 2011 and represents the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency . Before entering politics, he served in the Singapore Army and rose to brigadier general.

On September 5, 2017, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that he would appoint Tan as the next President of the Singapore Parliament. Tan's new role follows the resignation of Halimah Yacob as spokesman, who is slated to run in the 2017 presidential election. He was officially elected Singapore's 10th Speaker of Parliament on September 11, 2017.

Tan is also president of the Singapore National Olympic Council, a position he has held since 2014.

education

Tan was taught at the Anglo-Chinese School and Raffles Junior College . In 1988 he received an SAF Foreign Scholarship to study in Great Britain, where he received a Bachelor of Science (Econ) from the London School of Economics and a Master of Arts in Defense Science from King's College London .

Career

Military career

In 1987 Tan joined the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He continued to hold the positions of commanding officer of the 3rd Guard Battalion, Army Attaché in Jakarta, Commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade of Singapore, Deputy Chief of General Staff (Plans), Commander of 3rd Division and Commander of Training Army Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and rose to the rank of Brigadier General.

After the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean , Tan was the commander of the SAF Humanitarian Aid Task Force in Meulaboh , Indonesia .

In 2009, Tan was chairman of the Executive Committee of the Singapore National Day Parade.

On March 25, 2011, Tan left the SAF to stand up for parliament.

Political career

Tan was a PAP candidate in the Marine Parade Group constituency led by former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in the 2011 general election . The PAP constituency team defeated the opposition National Solidarity Party team with 78,286 votes (56.65%) against 59,926 votes (43.35%). Since then, Tan has been the MP for Kembangan Chai Chee .

On May 21, 2011, Tan was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of National Development.

On May 1, 2014, Tan was appointed a member of the Cabinet and took on the role of Minister of Labor.

On May 4, 2015, Tan resigned his position as Minister of Labor and became Minister for Social and Family Development as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

On September 11, 2017, Tan resigned his role as Minister for Social and Family Development and was elected 10th President of the Singapore Parliament.
