Life

Tanaka had been in the Japanese Army since 1905 after studying English literature at Oxford . He specialized in the works of Shakespeare . His strategic talent was quickly recognized. Shizuichi led the Japanese triumphal march through London after the First World War . This made him a little better known in military circles.

From October 15, 1941 to December 24, 1941 he was Commander-in-Chief of the Eastern District Regional Army . On March 9, 1945 Tanaka took over command of the 12th Regional Army , which he held until August 24, 1945.

First he protested against the planned attack on Pearl Harbor . But he remained loyal to the emperor and was stationed in the Philippines in 1942, where he was initially able to record some successes. In 1943 he was promoted to general . On August 14 and 15, 1945, he was instrumental in thwarting an attempted coup; which was undertaken to prevent the broadcast of the surrender speech.

Blaming himself for the bomb damage to Tokyo, he died of suicide a few days later in his office .
