The Tangra Yumco salt lake is located at an altitude of over 4528 m at the foot of the Dargo Mountain (Targo Ri) at the northern foot of the middle Gang Tise in a basin in the highland steppe of the Changthang in Tibet .
It is located in the district Nyima in the district of Nagqu of Tibet Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China . It is one of the three largest lakes in Tibet. The mountain and lake are venerated as holy by the followers of the Bon religion and are important pilgrimage sites.

"According to tradition, all the gods from the Zhangzhong Empire [see Shangshung ] gather on Dargo Mountain in Nyima County, which was the most important peak of the 360 peaks in the Zhangzhong Empire. [...] The goddess Cuomenlijiwangmucuo manages the Tangra Yumco Lake, 180 rivers and 180 lakes. The lake looks like a pestle and is surrounded by mountains. Four streams flow into the lake. On each of its four sides there is a spring in which pilgrims bathe to treat illnesses or to cleanse sins. Tangra Yumco is [sic!] The ruins of the site of King Limo of the Zhangzhong empire and a teaching institution of the Buddhist master Tamitage. Dargo and Tangra are words of the Zhangzhong language [see Zhangzhung (language) ]. "
