The Tantalus Peak is a mountain in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . At 2220 m , it is the highest peak on the south face of the head end of the Priestley Glacier .
The southern group of a campaign carried out from 1962 to 1963 as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition took the name after the figure of Tantalus, cursed by the gods, from Greek mythology . The background to this naming was the fact that the group had to abandon their plan to build a station here because of a too steep and icy climb.
