In the Grand Duchy of Hesse there was an award until 1918, which was originally donated by ordinance of September 25, 1843 as a general civil decoration by the almost 66-year-old Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse and initially only a few copies - so far only two Awards officially verifiable - was awarded. With the repeal of the Foundation Ordinance of 1843, Grand Duke Ludwig III then founded on November 14, 1849 . von Hessen received the General Badge of Honor , which was awarded in various special inscriptions from 1850 and was now basically also available to the military.

1843 to 1894

The general badge of honor was donated by Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse on September 25, 1843 and was awarded in various forms as a badge of honor for merits:

  • For bravery
  • For war merit
  • For merit
  • For faithful service
  • For long-term loyalty services
  • For fifty years of faithful service
  • For saving human life
  • For repeated saving of human life
  • For faithful work

1894 to 1918

In 1894 the statutes of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig were changed. Since then, the honorary badge has been awarded exclusively as the Hessian bravery medal . With the end of the monarchy in November 1918, the award was no longer awarded.

Appearance

From 1894 to 1918 , the award consisted of a silver medal with the portrait of the founder turned to the left on the obverse. On the back, a laurel wreath ( left) and oak wreath (right) encircled the words FOR BRAVERY . From mid-1917 the medal was only made silver-plated.
