The Tappenkarsee is a larger mountain lake in Salzburg in the Radstädter Tauern at about 1762  m above sea level. The lake was first measured by E. Fugger (1908). It is supplied with fresh water by the Kleinarlbach and has excellent water quality.

hikes

The Tappenkarsee is a popular area for hiking, mountain and ski tours. The easiest way to reach the Tappenkarsee is via Kleinarl and the Jägersee . Hikers can get to the Schwabalm car park by bus or car. In a hike of around three and a half hours, about 700 meters in altitude are overcome until the Tappenkarsee is reached and the wonderful lake and mountain panorama opens up. In summer there are two managed huts on the Tappenkarsee, the Tappenkarseealm directly on the lake shore and a half-hour hike further to the Tappenkarseehütte , which is 50 meters above the lake and where you can also spend the night. The Zweiseen hike from Jägersee to Tappenkarsee is especially popular with families with children. More tour options for mountaineers open up from the Tappenkarsee.

Due to its excellent water quality and the associated suitability as a fishing water, the Salzburg prince archbishops had the fish brought from Tappenkarsee and Jägersee to serve their guests.

The legend of the lindworm in the Tappenkarsee

Information board on the saga of the lindworm is located on the south bank of the lake

On the Tappenkar, a mountain in the Kleinarltal, lies a swampy mountain slope called "the worm field". A large dragon once lived here and wreaked havoc among the herds of cattle. The Kleinarl game and fish suppliers to the Salzburg Archbishop stuffed a cow skin with moss so that it looked like a bark, and put a packet of ignition powder in it instead of the stomach. They then threw this explosive four-legged "fish" into the lake. As soon as the lindworm saw the supposed cow, he pounced on it and devoured it as if it were just a small fork. Immediately the effect of the ignition powder became effective. An explosion occurred and killed the monster, relieving the population of a great deal of concern.

In another version of the legend, however, the lindworm is not supposed to be completely destroyed. It is said that he only retreated into the depths, and so there was only more disaster connected with the lindworm's escape, and the consequences would ultimately turn against the valley dwellers themselves. There in the depths of the Tappenkar the worm only gnaws “incessantly on the rocks that separate the lake from the valley”. And one day this nasty gnawing will “break down the thin wall” and the water of the Tappenkarsee will “flood the Kleinarltal far and wide”.

In a child-friendly and less bloodthirsty version of the lindworm baby in Tappenkarsee is reported, which is very shy and only rarely and very briefly appears on the water surface. According to reports, the baby lindworm is dark (dark brown to black) in color and has a blue serrated comb on its back.
