history

The Tappenkarsee

The first refuge on the Tappenkarsee was built in 1932/1933 near its south bank. The building owner of this hut was the Alpine Club Section Dresden of the DAV . After the end of the Second World War, the Allied victorious powers forced a change of ownership: the hut was withdrawn from the Dresden section, as were all the other Alpine Club huts in Austria that were owned by DAV sections at that time. The hut then became the property of the Pongau section of the OeAV.

The hut was so badly damaged by an avalanche at Christmas 1947 that it was no longer possible to continue to operate it afterwards. In the following years, the hut was not rebuilt and the Pongau section finally tried to change ownership, which should lead to the hut being taken over by a larger and more economically efficient AV section. The negotiations that started in 1950 with the Edelweiss Section dragged on over a longer period of time and were further complicated by the fact that the new construction of the hut was no longer permitted at its old location. It was not until January 1952 that these negotiations were successfully concluded and within the framework of these agreements, a 1180 m² replacement plot of land was purchased from the Alpine Cooperative. On this property, located well above the shoreline of the Tappenkarsee, today's hut complex was finally built in 1953/1954. To increase the existing overnight and guest room capacities, this was then increased again in 1983 by adding a hut.

During the winter of 1999/2000, another avalanche caused further damage: On the one hand, the mountain station of the material lift leading up from the banks of the Tappenkarsee to the hut was destroyed, and on the other hand, the hut itself was also seriously affected. This damage was repaired in the spring of 2000 and the mountain station of the material lift, which is indispensable for supplying the hut, was also restored. In 2008, expansion measures were finally carried out in and on the hut, during which, among other things, a new terrace was built.
