Tarahiki Island , also called Shag Island , is an island in the Hauraki Gulf in the north of the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The approximately 6 hectare island is located around 3 km east of Waiheke Island and around 24 km west of the small town of Coromandel on the Coromandel Peninsula . It has a length of around 470 m in north-south direction and measures around 240 m at its widest point. The highest point on the island comes to a height of 68 m .
Adjacent islands are Waiheke Island , Pakatoa Island in the west, Rotoroa Island in the southwest and the larger island of Ponui Island behind it .
Administratively, the island belongs to the Auckland Council .
Flora and fauna
On the island live in breeding colonies in about 700 potted shags belonging to the cormorant family , in New Zealand called Spotted Shag .
