Place name
The village was originally called Sibley. It was not until 1902 that the current name was registered by the United States Postal Service , as there was still a place Sibley in southwest Minnesota. The origin of the term Pequot is not entirely clear. There is an Indian tribe, the Pequot , but these people lived in eastern Connecticut when the first Europeans arrived . There are two possible explanations. On the one hand, it could be a variation of the word in Chippewa for arrow; the word bikwas was mentioned by Father Barroga in his dictionary of this indigenous language. On the other hand, a conversation recorded in 1936 with a contemporary witness indicates that the daughter of the Indian chief Waubanaquot lived north of the city in the mid-1890s. This allowed the first settlers to use their cave as a school and church. After her was O-Pequot and she was buried in the town's cemetery after her death.
