Taras Kyjak

Taras Romanowytsch Kyjak ( Ukrainian Кияк Тарас Романович , born March 23, 1944 in Vynnyky , Lviv Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † January 18, 2018 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian linguist and politician .

Life

Taras Kyjak was born on March 23, 1944 in Wynnyky, where he only spent the first four months of his life, as his family moved very often due to their connection to the Ukrainian resistance movement. His father Roman Andrij Kyjak (alias - Kryvonis Figurka, born May 17, 1920 in Wynnyky, † December 27, 1998 in Ivano-Frankivsk ) was a functionary of the Ukrainian liberation movement and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church .

Taras Kyjak studied German language and literature at the National Jurij Fedkowytsch University in Chernivtsi .

In 1978 he defended his dissertation on the subject of "Quantitative assessments of the motivation of terminological units" as a candidate for philology. In 1989 he was awarded a doctorate in philology with a dissertation on the subject of "Motivation of lexical units (quantitative and qualitative features)."

He was a doctor of philology and, from 2003, headed the chair for the theory and practice of translation from German at the Institute for Philology at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev .

Taras Kyjak taught lexicology of the German language, theory of translation, variability of the German language, terminology studies, introduction to translation studies, general linguistics, phonetics of the German language, rhetoric, scientific-technical translation and editing of scientific texts. He spent research stays in Leipzig, Munich and Vienna.

His research interests included the areas of technical languages, terminology, scientific and technical translation, translation studies, language politics and Ukrainian Latynka.

Taras Kyjak is the author of around 250 scientific publications. He died after a long illness on January 18, 2018 in a hospital in Kiev.

Political activity

Kyjak was a member of the Verkhovna Rada in the second convocation. He coordinated the “Constitutional Center” group, is one of the founders of the Bukovina Research Center and headed the “Ukraine - Germany” parliamentary group in the Verkhovna Rada from 1995 to 1998. He was also head of the “ Proswita ” (Enlightenment) regional organization in Chernivtsi ( 1990–1995), Chairman of the Ukrainian Terminology Society (2002), one of the co-founders of the Democratic Party of Ukraine (1990–2003) and has been awarded the Third Class Order of Merit . He wrote Article 10 (on language) of the Ukrainian constitution .

Honors

Kyjak was an honorary doctor of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe in Vienna and from 23 August 2012 was an “honorary citizen of Wynnyky”.
