Tarbert ( Irish : Tairbeart; transl. Analogously: " Portage ") is a town in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland .
Tarbert is in the far north of County Kerry, on the south bank of the mouth of the River Shannon . The place is 19 km northeast of Listowel , on the N69 from Limerick City to Tralee . The population of the place was determined in the Census 2016 with 540 people.
The Tarbert Island Lighthouse , which has been in operation since 1834, is located on Tarbert Island .

From an island connected to Tarbert by a land bridge, it is possible to take a ferry across the Shannon to County Clare , avoiding a detour of approx. 140 km via Limerick City . On this route, Tarbert is the end point of the national road N67 , which runs in its further course in County Clare near the Atlantic coast towards Galway City .
