Target was a Belgian progressive and thrash metal band from Aalst , which was formed in 1986 and split up in 1988.

history

The band was founded in April 1986 by guitarist Franky van Aerde and drummer Christ Braems. Several line-up changes followed until the band signed a contract with Aaarrg Records in early spring 1987. Shortly afterwards guitarist Chris De Turck left the band. In July and August 1987 the band recorded their debut album Mission Executed in the Phoenix Studio in Bochum , with the Dane Lex Vogelaar (later working for Orphanage ) as the new guitarist in the band. It was released in September. That same year, the band also recorded a demo produced by Ralph Hubert , a member of Mekong Delta and owner of Aaarrg Records. In order to make the band known in Germany, several concerts were scheduled for December, the first of which took place as part of the third "Metal Market" on December 20th in the Bochum colliery . At that time, bassist Johan Susant had officially switched to Holy Moses , but helped out in the absence of a well-rehearsed substitute bassist. A little later, however, he returned to the band. In the winter of 1987/1988 there were also management problems and singer Guy De Graeve increasingly lost interest in the band, so that the group broke up shortly after the release of the album Master Project Genesis . De Graeve had already been replaced by Steve Gray on the album.

style

The band played progressive thrash metal. The sometimes very high, clean vocals are particularly unusual. The music can be compared to the works of Mekong Delta and Megadeth . Target was certified as a good fit for the Aaarrg program alongside the Mekong Delta and Living Death . On the homepage the music is described as "Technical Thrash Metal". In Volume 1 of his Heavy Metal Lexicon, Matthias Herr praised not only the “compositional finesse”, but also the well thought-out texts that would communicate with the first cover artwork in particular . However, the musicians blamed this motif, which dispenses with metal clichés and shows nature's struggle to recapture human concrete structures, for the disregard of their album.
