Tarik A. Bary (2011)

Tarik Abdel Bary ( Arabic طارق عبد الباري, DMG Ṭāriq ʿAbd al-Bārī ; * 1961 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian university professor, translator, terminologist and author.

Life

Tarik Abdel Bary studied German, English and Arabic in Cairo and Münster ; He received his doctorate from the Language Faculty (Al-Alsun) of the Ain-Schams University in Cairo, where he teaches literary and cultural history as well as intercultural communication in the German department. He conducts research on translation, literature and media studies in an intercultural, especially German-Arabic or German-Egyptian context.

ÄDK and ARABTERM

Bary is the director and initiator of the Egyptian-German Cultural Center (ÄDK), founded in Cairo in 1998 , which aims to contribute to increased cultural exchange between Arab and German-speaking countries. The non-profit organization offers German courses and is an accredited language course partner of the Goethe Institute and a certified examination center for the Austrian Language Diploma . In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, the ÄDK is also active in the field of training and further education for specialist translators.

As a project partner, the ÄDK is involved in ARABTERM, a freely available technical online specialist dictionary for Arabic, German, English and French. Under the direction of Barys, a team of ten specialist translators is working on the translation of dictionary entries from areas such as automotive and water technology into Arabic . For many key terms there are no standardized and generally recognized Arabic terms, so that existing translations have to be updated or completely new word creations have to be created. According to Bary, mechatronics and variomatic , for example, can not be found in any other German or English-Arabic motor vehicle dictionary. The reason for this is, in addition to the large number of sometimes very different varieties of Arabic, a "crisis in the Arabic scientific language" which has suffered "for centuries from neglect and insufficient support". Against this background, ARABTERM contributes to the standardization of the Arabic language in the area of technology and business - similar to the media level for example the broadcasters Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya .

Literary and journalistic work

In addition to his translation and terminological activities, Bary writes short stories and poems that he publishes online or in print and presents on reading tours in Germany, among other places. For example, he deals with the subject of the Egyptian revolution , the course of which he witnessed in Cairo . In 2004, Bary's first children's book The King of Things was published , in which he uses a boarding school story to address corruption and nepotism in Egyptian society. In addition, Bary comments on media and cultural events as well as current political events in German and Arabic-language journalistic publications.
