Tarisa was the head of the Central Bank of Thailand from November 8, 2006 to September 30, 2010 . She succeeded Pridiyathorn Devakula after he became finance minister in the transitional government. She was previously the deputy head of the central bank. She was the first woman to head the central bank in its 64-year history.

Tarisa's monetary policy followed a protectionist approach. It is responsible for the regulation introduced in 2006 that foreign investors must deposit 30% of their capital invested in Thailand with the central bank without interest. This is to prevent an excessively strong baht , which would be harmful to the export-dependent industry in Thailand.

In 2007 she received an honorary doctorate from Keiō University.

She is married and has a daughter.
