The French Île Tatihou is located in the bay of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue , off the east coast of the Cotentin peninsula in the Manche department in Normandy , in the Baie de Seine . The island of only 29 hectares is home to a maritime museum, three gardens, a fort built by the Marquis Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (also le Prestre) 1633–1707 and a nature reserve.
Tatihou can be reached by 500 people a day with an amphibious vehicle from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. At low tide, Tatihou can also be reached on foot if the tide index published by the French Hydrographic Service (SHOM) for the respective tide is over 70, which is not the case , especially at nipptide .
The Île Tatihou has a history of over 300 years as a military base , trading center and place of scientific education. In 1888, the faculty council of the Natural History Museum of Paris ( Muséum national d'histoire naturelle de Paris) approved the establishment of a laboratoire de zoologie maritim in Tatihou's quarantine station. Since July 16, 1888, the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle de Paris has operated a veritable research station in these buildings. See also Laboratoire maritime de Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue .
Today, the historical heritage is maintained and nature conservation is pursued at this extraordinary location. In 1992 the local museum opened to display wreckage from the battle of La Hougue (1692). Two years after the battle, the fort was built on the edge of the island.
The four hectare gardens are protected by the fort's walls. They show local and imported flora:
- a contemporary garden
- an environmental garden
- an exotic garden
The bay of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is a valuable ornithological site that is home to more than a hundred species of birds. Guided tours are conducted by the Normandy Ornithological Group (GONms).
Every year in mid-August a music festival called "Les Traversées de Tatihou" takes place for four days on Tatihou.
