Pigeon Tower (Mounthooley)
The pigeon tower of Mounthooley is a pigeon tower near the Scottish village of Peathill in the council area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
description
The pigeon tower, built in 1800, stands on the hill Mounthooley , also called Holy Mount , about one kilometer west of Peathill. The isolated tower can also be seen from the sea side from the Moray Firth and forms a landmark both on land and for ships in Rosehearty Bay . The tower can be understood as both a pigeon tower and a folly .
The masonry of the high pigeon tower consists of quarry stone with granite natural stone details . Its facades are plastered with Harl . It has a square base with a side length of around 3.7 meters. Due to its beveled edges, however, a pseudo- octagonal floor plan is created. The entrance door is on the west side. Both the west and the opposite east facade are designed with oval windows. A simple belt cornice runs around below . Above, there is a slightly cantilevered pseudo-battlement reinforcement with final balls. Behind it rises the slate-covered pyramid roof .
Inside there are about 300 nesting boxes lined up along the walls. They are made of brick .
