The Tauber Bridge , popularly double bridge called, is a historic road bridge, the south-west of the city center of the Middle Franconian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the valley Tauber spans. The Rothenburger Taubertalweg runs over the structure with a 4.0 m wide carriageway and a 1.0 m wide sidewalk, here also a section of the communal road to Leuzenbronn.

history

The double bridge with two rows of arches standing on top of one another was probably built around 1330. It lies at the foot of the south-western slope of the Tauber below Rothenburg ob der Tauber and was part of a trade route from Augsburg to Würzburg . A repair from 1791 is known of building activities after the four upper arches collapsed a year earlier. In 1925 the eastern bridge driveway was expanded. On April 16, 1945, the building was blown up by the retreating German troops - one day before the city was taken by the US Army without a fight. The reconstruction was completed on November 10, 1956 after a good year of construction.

Building

The natural stone arch bridge made of limestone masonry connects the lower left and west bank of the Tauber with the right and further the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the right plateau. The road rises towards the southeast; at the north-western end of Leuzenbronn there is therefore only an arch with a clear width of 12.5 m, which spans the mill stream of the Herrenmühle. Only after a 5.0 m wide pier does the two-story bridge section begin in the direction of Rothenburg. This includes three large arches with clear widths of 11.5 m at the bottom in the middle part, then 12.2 m and 11.4 m above the Tauber, which are supported on two 4.5 m wide river piers lying between them. In the south-eastern section across the river, a 1.75 m wide pillar and an 8.5 m wide arch, which spans a sidewalk, follow. Two last arches with a width of 6.3 m and 5.6 m complete the lower row of arches.

The upper nine arcs stand on the lower six arcs without any rule. They are circular arcs with clear widths between 5.8 m and 6.2 m; the arrow height increases with the road gradient from 2.3 m to 3.0 m. The 45 cm thick parapets are 126 m long. The bridge used to be 5.4 m wide, but has been 6.4 m wide since it was rebuilt in 1956.
