Tauern gas pipeline

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tauern Gas Pipeline (TGL) is a natural gas pipeline project to connect the high-pressure natural gas networks in Germany and Italy. The northern starting point should be near Haiming / Burghausen . There is also the connection to Penta-West . In the south, near Arnoldstein, the connection to the Trans-Austria gas pipeline is to be made. The TGL would have a length of around 290 km and a nominal diameter of 900 mm. Planned completion is 2017 [obsolete] . The Tauern gas pipeline is one of the possible connections to the north in connection with the planned South Stream .

The project is supported by a consortium (Tauerngasleitung GmbH) from Energie AG Oberösterreich (15.99%), Kelag (6.11%), RAG (10.66%), Salzburg AG (15.99%), TIGAS-Erdgas Tyrol (5.09%) and E.ON Ruhrgas (46.17%).

With slightly changed shares, the shareholders decided on April 3, 2014 to end the 1.4 billion euro project. According to a new EU regulation, energy companies are no longer allowed to have a majority in this project, and no other investors were in sight. The company, which has existed since 2008, is to be liquidated. The shareholders bear 15 to 16 million euros in start-up losses for the planning phase.

Some neighboring communities and citizens' initiatives are happy about the end, the resistance was particularly fierce in Salzburg, especially in Tennengau. Significance was attached to the TGL for the connection to the strong natural gas networks of Germany and Italy and for the proximity to large natural gas storage facilities and terminals. E-Control reported that the domestic supply is secured even without the TGL and that the gas infrastructure standard in Austria is 233% met. A market survey by TGL showed only modest interest in an additional gas pipeline through Austria.
