Teachers College of Columbia University

Teachers College , Columbia University ( TC ) is a New York City college of education, health, and psychology founded in 1887 . Since 1898 it has been a faculty and department at Columbia University . TC is the oldest and largest graduate school of education in the USA. Teachers College has over 90,000 alumni in more than 30 countries.

The scientific goals extend well beyond the original teacher training in New York State. It was recognized early on that professional teacher training had to deal with the conditions for effective learning. From the beginning, were educational psychology and educational sociology taught. Ethical, political, historical and comparative educational studies were also necessary .

As the number of students in society increased, programs were developed for educational administration, educational economics , organizational psychology , developmental psychology , curriculum development , media education , and health care.

From 1904 to 1930 the great educator of the USA, John Dewey , who was also president of the American Psychological Association and the American Philosophical Association , belonged to the Teachers College . Well-known professors also included Margaret Mead , Carl Rogers , Edward Lee Thorndike , Rollo May , Isaac Leon Kandel , and Ruth Westheimer .
