Isaac Leon Kandel (born January 22, 1881 in Botoșani ( Romania ), † June 14, 1965 in Geneva ) was a British-American educationalist who mainly taught in the USA . He is considered to be the founder of comparative education in the USA.

life and work

The son of English parents studied ancient languages until 1906 at the University of Manchester , until his doctorate in education in 1910 at Columbia University . He attended summer courses at the University of Jena with Wilhelm Rein . For several years he taught in schools in Ireland, then he became a lecturer at Columbia. 1914 Kandel was a specialist of the Carnegie Foundation for the promotion of teacher training at the International Institute of the Teachers College of Columbia until 1946, from 1923 as a professor and colleague of John Dewey . He was the first Jew in such a position. Then he returned to Manchester again until 1949/50 .

As early as 1934/35 ( The Making of Nazis ) he published a critical analysis of education under National Socialism , in which he showed how Hitler used teacher training to spread his ideas among young people. The book received little attention.

Kandel viewed comparative education as a study of the ways in which individual countries approach educational problems in the context of their social, political and cultural traditions. In this respect he spoke of a national character. In Comparative Education (1933) Kandel said:

"The chief value of a comparative approach to [educational] problems lies in an analysis of the causes which have produced them, in a comparison of the differences between the various systems and the reasons underlying them, and, finally, a study of the solutions attempted. "

Kandel (1943) was an opponent of progressive education of pragmatism in the USA because he was against its lack of tradition and did not want to base education on the subjective goals of the students.
