Tears Getting Sober ( English for tears will dry ) is an English-language pop song that was written by Borislav Milanov 's team and performed by Viktorija Georgiewa under her stage name VICTORIA. With the title she should represent Bulgaria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

In November 2019 the Bulgarian National Television announced that VICTORIA would represent their country at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2020. Her post Tears Getting Sober was published on March 7, 2020 . It was composed and written by Borislaw Milanow with Georgiewa himself, Lukas Janisch and Cornelia Wiebols. Georgiew, Milanow and Wiebols were responsible for production together with Fredrik Toremark.

Music and lyrics

According to Milanow, the song deals with mental disorders. He was written on a day when everything was working against his destiny. Two songwriters from another team suffered a panic attack and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. It later became clear that the title on which Milanow and his team wrote was about precisely this topic. Many young people are affected by mental illnesses these days. The title is also about how to survive the problems and that there is still hope. The only chance to escape these is to face your fears. Georgieva says that the song's statement is also well reflected in the context of the coronavirus , even though it was written before the COVID-19 pandemic .

The song is introduced and exited by a choir, as is the refrain. The singer is mainly accompanied by a piano, which is supported in the chorus with gentle strings. In general, the instrumentation is kept rather minimalist. Towards the end of the bridge, the dynamics increase, which can be perceived by the newly added strings and the modulation of the voice. Then the refrain is repeated one last time with a backward movement . This is also the only part of the song where the drums are used.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Bulgaria should have appeared with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

ESCXtra compared the title with Billie Eilish and the Romanian ESC contribution Alcohol You and said that the last 30 seconds brought the song to the top. It was also noted that the title was rather untypical for Bulgaria's history at the Grand Prix and that the attempt was made to reproduce the British and US chart scenes. The Eurovisionary blog drew a comparison with Disney film music in terms of the arrangement of the choir and instruments . Negative voices report a sweetish overall impression and criticize the too late increase. ESC Kompakt sees Tears Getting Sober clearly ahead of Alcohol You . Milanow tailor the singer "an almost fairytale-sounding quiet song". The "fragility of the song and her voice" is fascinating.

publication

The song was released as a single on March 7, 2020. The accompanying music video was produced under the direction of the singer together with Viktorija Karakolewa. Likewise, the title is alright as a bonus track from Georgiewa's single . available.
