The Teatro Ángela Peralta is an opera and concert hall located on Avenida Carnaval ( Plaza Machado ) in the Mexican city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa .

history

In the middle of the 19th century Mazatlán only had a theater . This was named Teatro del Recreo after the street on which it was located ( Calle Recreo , today Constitución ). However, the theater was in a generally poor condition and so in 1869 the entrepreneur Manuel Rubio presented his design for a new and modern theater building to the city council. Construction began that same year and lasted five years. But the client did not live to see the completion because he died on a boat trip to Paris , where he wanted to purchase utensils for the theater under construction. In order to complete her husband's life's work, his widow financed the construction of the building, which opened as the Teatro Rubio on February 15, 1874 . At this time, however, some furnishings were still missing, which led to corresponding discrepancies between the city and the widow. After three years, the widow sold the building and further work on its final completion was only carried out between 1879 and its official opening on February 6, 1881.

A performance by the Mexican opera singer Ángela Peralta was planned for August 1883, but this did not materialize because the artist fell ill with yellow fever on arrival and died a few days later in room 10 of the neighboring Hotel Iturbide .

Until the early 1940s, the building served primarily as a stage for operas and operettas , but also as a venue for other cultural events and at times also for carnival events .

In 1943 the building was converted into a cinema and was named Cine Ángela Peralta in honor of the opera singer who died in the neighboring Hotel Iturbide . The building served as a cinema until 1964 and then stood empty for five years. From 1969 onwards, infrequently used, the building was badly damaged by a hurricane in 1975 . After years of vacancy, the city administration decided to rebuild in 1987, which was followed by the ceremonial reopening on October 23, 1992.

Today's Teatro Ángela Peralta mainly hosts symphony concerts, opera and ballet events, and readings.
