Plaza Machado

The Plaza Machado is a central square in the Mexican city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa .

history

The Plaza Machado , sometimes referred to as Plazuela Machado , is one of the oldest squares in Mazatlán and forms the historical and cultural center of the city.

The plaza was laid out in 1837 by the wealthy Filipino trader Juan Nepomuceno Machado and is influenced by French and Spanish architecture. The plaza is one of the main tourist attractions of Mazatlán and the heart of the old town. Around the plaza there are some cafes, a museum (Museo Casa Machado), a hotel (Hotel Machado) and Mazatlan's most important theater, the Teatro Ángela Peralta . Because of the orange trees surrounding the square, the plaza was also known as Paseo de las Naranjas (or Orange Promenade ). The plaza has always served as a popular meeting place for locals; a tendency that intensified after the iron arbor was built in 1870.

Plaza Machado also plays a central role during the Carnival in Mazatlán ; It is no coincidence that the Plaza is located on the Avenida Carnaval of the same name .
