Kursaal Theater
The Teatro Kursaal was a theater in Lugano, Switzerland, directly on Lake Lugano .
As early as 1804, there was a “gaming room” in Lugano, where games of chance and dice were played. Around 1885 a company, the Società del Teatro di Lugano , was founded, which wanted to combine a building for theater, music and balls with a casino and a restaurant in order to cater to the emerging tourism.
The Teatro e Casinò Kursaal building , built around the turn of the century and based on plans by the architect Achille Sfondrini , established itself as a theater and revue stage, while the other half of the building housed a casino. The first Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson took place in the theater on May 24, 1956, without an audience .
The Teatro was demolished in 2001 as a building in great need of renovation . Today the casino Casinò Lugano is located here .
