Tebaldo Monzani

Tebaldo Monzani (* 1762 in the Duchy of Modena , † July 14, 1839 in Florence ) was an Italian flautist , music publisher , flute maker and composer .

life and work

Tebaldo Monzani appeared in London in 1785 as a flute virtuoso, where he worked as a soloist and orchestral musician until 1803, for example at the King's Theater and in the concerts organized by Johann Peter Salomon .

In 1787 Monzani began to publish his own compositions as well as music by other composers. From 1789 he worked with the piano maker and music publisher James Ball in printing and sales and began a partnership with Giambattista Cimador in 1800 under the name Monzani & Cimador , who from 1803 was located in a building known as the “Opera Music Warehouse”. In 1805 Monzani continued this activity alone. Monzani had also started making his own flutes around 1800 and entered into a partnership with Henry Hill (1781–1839) around 1807/08 . The company, which appeared as Monzani & Hill or Monzani & Co. , manufactured flutes and clarinets and came under royal patronage around 1815 as the “music seller to the Prince Regent”. In 1829 Monzani withdrew, the company was first run by Hill, then by his widow and son until 1845.

Monzani & Co. produced a large number of high quality flutes, around 150 of which have survived. They have serial numbers and hallmarked silver keys. It was partially boxwood used mainly the instruments, however, are made of ebony , coconut wood , rosewood and ivory made.

Monzani composed several works for "his" instrument. He also published the textbook Monzani's Instructions for the German Flute, which has been published several times .
